2008 Tam Golf Season Begins

The golf shop staff and I would like to welcome everyone back to Tam O’Shanter for the start of another great season.  We hope everyone had a terrific off-season and is eager to enjoy all the amenities our great club has to offer.  My staff and I are anxious to get the season underway and look forward to welcoming back our entire membership.

This past winter, I had the good fortune to participate in a few events sponsored by the PGA of America in Port Saint Lucie , Florida .  I played in 6 events with my best finish a win in the last Srixon Series event just before Christmas.  I was in a four-way playoff in the rain that lasted 3 holes.

In January I participated in the National PGA Stroke Play Championship conducted at the PGA Village in Port St Lucie.  As you can see in the following article, it was a good week!

New Yorker Brown ties record to claim

PGA Stroke Play Championship

Mark Brown of Oyster Bay , N.Y. , completed a wire-to-wire performance with a closing 2-under-par 70, his highest score of the week, to win the 55th annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Stroke Play Championship, Jan. 31, on the Wanamaker Course at The PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie , Fla.

The PGA head professional at Tam O'Shanter Golf Club in Brookville , N.Y. , Brown equaled the scoring record for the nine years the PGA Stroke Play Championship has been played at The PGA Golf Club.

Anthony Cancro -Director of Instruction

Anthony Cancro will begin his third full season at Tam O’Shanter as our Director of Instruction.  He was a huge success over the last couple years as one of our instructors.  Over the winter he was teaching at the Velocity Sports Center in Syosset as well as catching up with some quality time with his family.  Anthony is back in the shop at Tam and is dedicated to helping improving your game with his one on one instruction.  Give him a call to schedule an early appointment and start the season off right.

Over the winter I interviewed candidates for our 2 new Assistant professional positions.  I was extremely excited when I received over 30 resumes for this position.  After several interviews, I believe I filled these positions with 2 very qualified candidates.

Jeff May- Assistant Golf Professional

Jeff is an up-and-coming golf professional in the metropolitan area.  Jeff comes to us after working as the 1st Assistant Professional at Timber Point in Great River, NY.  He has studied under one of Golf Digests Top 50 National Instructors and has worked as an instructor with Tom Watson in the Cadillac Championship Golf Clinic. Currently he competes on the Metropolitan PGA Assistant Tour as well as other local golf association events. Jeff’s teaching philosophies are personalized around each individual’s goals and abilities. His straightforward approach helps students improve in an uncomplicated manner allowing them to achieve their objectives with measured results.  Jeff spent the winter working at Bear Lakes in West Palm and will join the Tam staff March 14th

Peter Kennedy-Assistant Golf Professional

The final piece of the puzzle was put together right after the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando .  I interviewed and hired Peter Kennedy.  Peter comes to us from Island Hills Country Club in Sayville, NY.  Peter has been in the

golf business for the last 4 years.  He is an enthusiastic, energetic individual that possesses great people skills and will be and added bonus to the Tam family.  He is a very outgoing individual with a love for the game.  He has an abundance of knowledge in the golf industry.  He will be an asset to my operation as well as assisting any of your needs while at Tam O’Shanter.    He has been working at The Golf Club at Dell Webb in Naples this winter and will be joining us the week of March 18th.

Jon Eichner-Starter/Caddie Master

Jon Eichner, our Starter, has returned for his 8th season here at Tam O'Shanter.  Over the winter Jon spent some quality family time traveling with his wife Kerrin and their three children Jaycee, Hunter and Kallie.  Jon's experience and familiarity with Tam ensures that we can expect another year of consistent outside operations and course management.

Jon can be reached at golfstarter@tamoshanterclub.com or (516) 626-1585, regarding tee times, caddies, setting up games or any other questions you may have.  Restricted tee times will begin Saturday, April 12th

Tam O’Shanter’s New Fitness Center

Yes, that’s right!  We have our own fitness center and trainers to help enhance your golfing abilities.  John Ondrush from the Velocity Sports Center and the John Ondrush Fitness Academy will be joining the golf staff at Tam this year.  John is one of the main reasons I enjoyed a successful playing season last summer as well as 2 victories this winter down in Port St Lucie, Fl.  Through his analysis and fitness evaluation of me, he was able to tailor a golf specific workout program to strengthen my weaknesses that appeared in my golf swing.  I am definitely a big believer in what a proper golf specific exercise program can do to improve your golf game.

As you have seen on the PGA, LPGA and Senior PGA tours, the players are working out to enhance their performance.  It is obviously working for them, so give John a call for a fitness evaluation and find out what he can do to improve your game.  Here is a little bit of info about John:

  At Tam O’Shanter

Certified Medical and Golf Fitness Instructor

 with the Titleist Performance Institute

  Callaway Master Staff Professional

John is a certified golf fitness instructor, specializing in sports medicine, rehabilitation, as well as strength and conditioning for golfers. John is the only golf fitness professional in the country certified as a medical and fitness professional by the Titleist Performance Institute and also holds a position on the Callaway golf company’s master staff.

The program’s evaluation consists of a physical exam designed to evaluate the body’s ability or inability to perform in a golf swing, which directly correlates with a player’s swing faults. As a result, after identifying the golfer’s biomechanical faults, a custom golf fitness program is then design around the player’s physical limitations to improve the body’s performance as it relates to the golf swing. The results are tremendous in that it allows for greater distance, accuracy, balance along with better posture. Not only will the golfer’s body have the physical ability to get in better positions, the lifetime swing faults are also corrected and the final result is a better golfer and lower scores.

We are very excited for the upcoming season.  If you are interested in shopping in the golf shop, most of the hard goods (clubs, shoes, balls, and bags) will begin arriving March 20th.  The soft goods should start arriving the first week of April.  Don’t forget, we have a state of the art launch monitor to properly fit the right driver for you as well as the Callaway Opti Fit cart for iron and wood fittings.

Also at the PGA Merchandise Show I purchased the TOMI Putting Analysis System (www.puremotionsports.com).  The TOMI putting system is the putter equivalent to a launch monitor for drivers.  I also ordered a Mitchell Loft & Lie machine to bend your irons lie angle to fit you properly.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone and getting the season going.  Let’s hope old man winter stays away.  Spring is just around the corner so we hope to see you soon. If there is anything we can do, please don’t hesitate to call us at 626-1580
